Reactor Room Chemist Level III.

We Offer…

An exciting role as a Reactor Room Chemist III. based in Danbury, Connecticut.

Shifts are on a fixed scheduled of three, twelve hours shifts (3×12) a week. Straight days or straight nights.

Current 12 hour fixed shifts:

  • 1st shift A: Sun – Tue, 6:00am – 6:30pm.
  • 2nd shift A: Sun – Tue, 6:00pm – 6:30 am (Wed) (Additional shift differential included)
  • 1st shift B: Wed – Fri, 6:00am – 6:30pm.
  • 2nd shift B: Wed – Fri, 6:00pm – 6:30am (Sat) (Additional shift differential included)

This function conducts processing operations related to production of organic chemicals using synthetic chemical methods and related support systems with wide latitude for use of initiative and independent judgment. Duties may include transporting, weighing, pumping, mixing, cooling, heating and analysis of various chemical substances, as well as process scale ups, and implementation of new processes and process improvements. This involves a range of activities including:

  • Sets up and adjusts chemical production equipment. Operates heating, cooling, vacuum and pressure systems.
  • Transports, weighs, mixes, and pumps chemical materials.           
  • Maintain an organized and clean work area.
  • May order equipment and/or raw materials.
  • Proper monitoring of processing steps to ensure product quality, lot consistency and yields.
  • Calculates materials needed for reactions and can adjust scale quantities appropriate to the equipment.
  • Controls process parameters through proper adjustments of feed rates, cooling and/or heating.
  • Uses analytical equipment (gas chromatography) for assessing in-process and final product status. Understands principles of operation of the analytical equipment and can interpret results. Serves as a technical authority and offers suggestions to modify in-process parameters to accommodate unexpected deviations from the norm.
  • May serve as a mentor for less experienced production personnel and a technical resource for the widest range of production related issues.
  • May train new staff and advise supervisor on progress. Including recommendations on further training requirements or sign-off. 
  • Maintains all necessary production, safety, inventory, training, and other records and/or logs as required, in written and/or computer format.
  • May prepare test results or reports as directed.
  • Ensures proper care, safety, maintenance and usage of technology, equipment, and/or systems.
  • May be asked to write or assist with new Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for safely executing reactor room related tasks. 
  • Receives and carries out instructions on specific assignment objectives.
  • Complies with all BRI environmental and safety policies and procedures.
  • Performs related work as assigned, with very low error rates and continues to learn from experience. 

You Offer…

  • BS/BA in chemistry or related field is generally preferred and seven or more years’ experience in chemical production work. May have additional post-graduate work.
  • In depth knowledge of the principles and techniques of organic and analytical chemistry and a broad overview of it’s relationship to production.
  • Knowledge of piping and valve operations to control reactions.
  • A solid knowledge of health, safety and regulatory related issues and a broad overview of its relationship to production issues.
  • Ability to use interchangeably metric and U.S standards of weights and measures and their application to determining molar quantities.
  • Can correlate data from all production areas and apply that information in troubleshooting and process improvements.
  • Skill in the operation of chemical production equipment. Ability to offer sound recommendations for new and replacement equipment.
  • Skill in the use of physical and chemical analyses, interpretation of results and formulation of sound ideas based on those results.
  • Demonstrates initiative by: anticipating what needs to be done, coming up with original suggestions to improve operation, and performing at the same level with the absence of supervisors.
  • Should be aware of what is happening in the department/equipment and know what other staff members are working on.
