Food safety is something that we all take seriously. Bedoukian Research is proud to announce that it is in full compliance with the applicable sections of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). FSMA is a US law meant to protect American consumers from contamination or dangers in the food supply. It places many strict requirements on all companies that sell food or food ingredients in or into the United States. FSMA was signed into law on January 4, 2011 and has led to the promulgation of seven new rules, including the Preventive Controls Rule and the Foreign Supplier Verification Program. Under this regulation, any ingredient that enters the food supply fits the definition of food, meaning that suppliers of flavors and flavor chemicals are held to the same requirements as packaged food companies. This creates many challenges, since as you can imagine, regulations written for ready-to-eat foods do not always translate easily to flavors and flavor ingredients.
As part of the new requirements currently in effect, companies are required to undergo an in-depth hazard analysis, inspecting each step of their production process from acquiring raw materials, through production, quality control, and eventually dispensing and shipping the product, to identify and categorize all risks of contamination to the food supply. Suppliers into the food and flavor industry are now required to have not only their own written food safety programs, but also thorough vendor approval programs, which require them to inspect and approve the food safety plans of their suppliers. Foreign suppliers selling into the United States are expected to meet the requirements of this regulation. The regulations include the need for fast and accurate recall capabilities for all companies in the industry along with many other requirements. FDA inspections will entail an exhaustive review of policies and documentation, with potentially heavy penalties for those who do not comply.
Bedoukian has undergone a thorough analysis for sources of potential contamination and determined there are no significant hazards associated with our products. We follow Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP's) as outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations (21CFR Part 117 Subpart B) and have a strict vendor approval program in place. All employees have been thoroughly educated on the expectations set forth by FSMA as it relates to their job functions. To ensure that our material is not only safe for consumption, but also remain consistent with Bedoukian's reputation for the highest quality, we have added an extra layer of purification to many products from overseas vendors.
Many of our customers have started sending FSMA related questionnaires, and we are happy to assist with any necessary documentation. Please send any such requests to Customer Service. The FDA website has additional information on FSMA if you are interested in researching it further. If you are not aware of FSMA or whether your company is in compliance, we urge you to contact your regulatory team and make sure that the proper vendor approval and food safety programs are in place.
