Bedoukian Gives Back

Throughout the years Bedoukian Research and its employees have spent time volunteering with the Connecticut Food Bank here in Danbury, CT. In addition to their Mobile Food Pantry, the Connecticut Food Bank has also had a need for volunteers for their Kids’ BackPack program, which takes place at their Fairfield, CT warehouse.

The Kids’ BackPack program serves low-income children between the ages of 3 and 13. Volunteers help fill bags with nutritional meals, which are then distributed to children throughout schools in CT for the weekends when their free or reduced price meals are not available.

On October 26, 2017, Bedoukian volunteers donated their time to lend a helping hand for this program and were able to fill over 1,000 bags, job well done! It is always a pleasure volunteering at the Connecticut Food Bank and we look forward to the next time we are able to work with one another in order to solve hunger in Connecticut.

Local High School Chemistry Students Visit BRI

On May 18th Bedoukian Research, Inc. welcomed 11 students & their teacher from a Danbury High School chemistry class. These sophomores and juniors were interested in learning more about opportunities in chemistry. Representatives from Quality Control, Research & Development and Production gave tours of our facility.

The tours began in our QC lab where the students learned about the types of quality tests performed on typical flavor/fragrance ingredients. This included the instrumentation used to perform these tests. Next up was the R&D department where new molecules are developed and process improvements are made. The tour continued through our scale up lab into the main production areas where large-scale chemical syntheses and purification via distillation take place. This allowed the students to see how a product is generated from start to finish.

Our Sales Department concluded the tour with some fragrance demonstrations. The students smelled two of our top products (BRI # 857 LAVENDER ALDEHYDE FCC and BRI # 493 GUAVANATE) in accords on blotter comparing the without to the with. The point of this exercise was to allow the students to use their sense of smell to see the impact Bedoukian ingredients are capable of making when added to an accord. They were asked to tap into their creative thinking and to converse with one another as to what the differences were that they got between the two (w/o and w/) accords, as well as what they felt each ingredients accord was trying to portray fragrance wise discovering in this process the subjectivity of fragrance evaluation. The students were very intrigued throughout the demonstration, asking questions and participating fully in discussion. After they finished comparing accords they were given two additional productions to smell in dilution (BRI #433 ETHYL 2,4-DECADIENOATE & BRI #536 TROPICAL DIENOATE). During this time they were asked if they were capable of identifying what each ingredients characteristics were (pear and tropical fruit respectively).

Overall, it was a rewarding experience to be able to give back to the community. These students, hopefully soon to be future chemists, were exceptionally bright and enthused with all that we do at Bedoukian. Their teacher, Michelle McCabe reached out to our Customer Service the following day stating, “Speaking for me and the kids, we would like to thank you for allowing us to visit your facility. My students were so impressed by the demonstrations and the tour of the facility…please pass forward the message to all that took time to enrich the education of hopefully upcoming scientist. Finally, a special thanks to Mr. Bedoukian for meeting us and allowing this field trip to happen!

Bedoukian was happy to have them and wishes them the best of luck as they continue their education in chemistry!
